At Number Plate Maker they certainly do in tiny writing at the bottom of the plates.  Number Plate Genie is registed with the DVLA. This is a legality  as it means the police or authorities can check if they are genuine and your vehicle will pass the MOT check. We do not use this for advertising that’s why we keep it so small.

All our 2D Plates, 3D Gel Plates and 4D Plates include legal details.

Getting your plates from The Number Plate Maker DVLA registered number plate supplier, we have to request documents that prove your identity and that you can use the registration number. We understand this is a slight inconvenience, but do our best to ensure sending documents to us is made as simple as possible. Be aware of other suppliers that do not request these documents, as it may suggest the replacement number plates they are producing are not road legal.

When sending in documents we require one of each of the following:

To confirm your identity

  • driving licence
  • utility, Council Tax or rates bill from the last 6 months
  • bank or building society statement from the last 6 months
  • national identity card

To confirm you can use the registration

  • vehicle registration certificate (V5C or V5CNI)
  • new keeper supplement (V5C/2 or V5C/2NI)
  • of entitlement (V750 or V750NI) to the number
  • retention document (V778) – not applicable in Northern Ireland
  • a renewal reminder for vehicle tax or SORN (V11 or V11NI)
  • temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI)
  • a number plate authorisation certificate (V948) with an official stamp from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)
  • an electronic number plate authorisation certificate (eV948)
  • a letter of authorisation from a fleet operator (including lease or hire company) quoting the document reference number from the registration certificate

Incorrectly spaced number plates are illegal and can result in a fine of up to £1,000, along with an MOT failure. As a DVLA registered number plate supplier, UK Registrations only prints number plates with the correct, legal spacing. If you try to use incorrect spacing when using our plate builder, it will be corrected to the legal spacing.

Drill holes vary depending on the manufacturer and model of your vehicle so plates will be sent out without drill holes. The easiest way to fit new number plates to your vehicle is to use our sticky pads, which do not require any drilling. Alternatively you can purchase our fixing kit which includes all the required screws and caps to fix the replacement number plates to your car.

All number plates made in the UK must meet the newest standard, which is Bsau 145e. The previous standard had been in effect since 2001. Standards were originally introduced because it was felt that number plate design and production had become uncontrolled. NumberPlates-online only sells number plates that fully comply with the new standard.

The number plates on your vehicle must:

  • be made from a reflective material
  • display black characters on a white background (front plate)
  • display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern

At Number Plate Maker we’ve designed our custom number plate maker services to be as easy as possible to use, but also to offer a wealth of personalization possibilities. Amongst the many custom options is the ability to choose your preferred font, whether you have a border running around the outside of the plate, as well as the spacing between the letters and numbers.

Other personalization available includes the ability to choose between our colour laser, 3D gel or 4D premium options. Each range has its own unique style and selling points, but they all have something in common – they all have the ability to completely transform the look of your car and have people pointing you out from the crowd. It’s something of a given when using our custom reg plates.

Number Plate Zone only sells replacement number plates. To purchase number plates on our site you must have permission from the person that owns the registration. To ensure number plates are only purchased by those that own the registration, and to comply with DVLA registered number plate supplier rules, when purchasing your number plate we request proof of ownership and identification documents.

All modern number plates are yellow on the rear and white on the front.

If you would like a number plate with a green EV flash, then yes, you can get one of these from us. However, you must prove that your vehicle is eligible for one.

What is the difference between a number plate and a show plate?

In short, a number plate is legal for road use whereas a show plate is technically not.

Typically, show plates are found attached to vehicles in car showrooms (hence the name “show plate”) to catch the eyes of potential customers. A common use of a show plate in a showroom context is to advertise the make or model of the car it’s attached to, for example, the registration “911” for a Porsche 911.

However, the term show plate has come to mean any number plate that doesn’t meet legal UK road specifications. For example, when road users fiddle with fonts and character spacing to try and form a more aesthetically pleasing appearance for their plates (usually to create the illusion of words or names).

A less extreme example of a show plate, but still technically illegal for road use, is a plate without the mandatory manufacturer’s name and postcode printed across the bottom line.

Show plates are sold as signs or novelty items and the customer attaches them to their vehicle at their own risk.

This is a relatively simple process providing you ordered the number plate fitting kit with your new plates. You can watch our step-by-step video guides here (screw method) and here (sticky pad method)

There are strict laws governing the sale and making of number plates in the UK. For example, you can only get a number plate made up from a Registered Number Plate Supplier. NumberPlates-Online are registered with the DVLA as a Registered Number Plate Supplier.

The law requires that suppliers have sight of the original documentation for the customer’s proof of identity and entitlement to the number plates requested. There are no exemptions to this requirement and photocopies of documents or copies sent as an attachment to an email or submitted via a website are not acceptable for validation purposes

As a Registered Number Plate Supplier, NumberPlates-Online comply with the legal requirements for buying and supplying number plates in the UK, which means, we’ll need to see original documents that:

  • prove your name and address
  • show you’re allowed to use the registration number

Motorcycles and motor tricycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle registered before 1 September 2001 you can also display a number plate at the front, but you do not have to.

Motorcycle and motor tricycle number plate numbers should be on 2 lines.

The characters on a number plate need to be a certain height and size.

Read leaflet INF104: vehicle registration numbers and number plates – height and size measurement, for more information.
